Does a tree make a sound when it falls in the forest, if no one is around to hear it? Very peaceful looking area, color, lighting, and composition very good..............Opal

This process is also called frost shattering. These boulders are quite often called radicals, because of the distinct difference in rock composition compared to the other specimens in the area. The rock breaks down, because water infiltrates the small cracks of the rock and then freezes. When water freezes, it expands by roughly 8 percent. To better understand what is happening, imagine driving a wedge into a piece of wood. This particular type of rock looks like granite, or some type of volcanic deposit. Further evidence of this process is the presence of scree or a talus slope. Talus, or scree, is a fairly large pile of loose wedge shaped rock of the same material as the rock undergoing erosion present all the way around the deposit. This process can also occur in desert regions, because it has a large diurnal temperature range, which results in the expansion contraction of the rock.

OK, thanks for the comment, Mark. As a way of explaining why I did use sharpening and color enhancement, the picture was hand-held under artificial light, and there was resulting camera movement. The sharpening diminished that, and the original color was an ugly orange. I, and the band members, enjoyed the blue tint better than the orange. I appreciate where you are coming from, though -- a more purist point of view. Thanks again.

It's a good shot, but the photo would be more interesting to me without the effects.

Don't be discouraged by the lack of comments or views. Sometimes that just happens, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the photo. It happens to mee as well.

I like the larger shot of this. It's an amazing plant, and you've captured it from a unique perspective.

Thanx again, Peter. Your comments mean alot to me. I had a feeling that this shot was below par for this site because of the low viewing/no comment score it has garnered, but as you know, I like texture and detail, so I am happy with the shot. I do the best I can with my low-rez camera and appreciate your comments.

Here's a bigger shot of this huge gunnera plant. I had never seen anything like it before I moved up to coastal Canada seven years ago. They call them elephant ears up here.

Well, thank YOU, Steve! I looked at your portfolio also and there are some really interesting shots there -- an eclectic mix, but seemingly very telling of your personality. This shot was taken a few yards away from where I took my "Hovering Kingfisher" entry. I appreciate your kind comment, Steve.

Thanx, Peter. I DO pride myself on looking rather closely at the things around me...there's a whole 'nother layer of life there if you look close, just like the peeling bark. I appreciate comments and criticism, especially from as successful a photographer as you.

Nice.. I spent one summer during university working out of Gibsons... almost 20 years ago now - where did the time go? Good to see there's still sun on the Sunshine Coast.

Actually, Opal, the winters where I am, surprisingly to some, have very little ice and snow. I am on the west coast of Canada near Vancouver, and the ocean currents that come by here on their way south moderate the temperature, so that winters here only get down to about what the low winter temps are in Texas, where I moved up here from. The winter high temps are alot warmer there than here, though. It is rainy on the Canadian "Sunshine Coast", though, similar to Seattle's weather most of the year. I don't mind the rain, so it's perfect for me here, except I wish the ocean water was warmer. Oh well, it's always SOMETHING, huh? I mean "EH?"... Great for picture-taking, anyway. Thanks for your comment.

The colors are warm and rich, I'd love to live in the area you live, but my mother couldn't tolerate the cold, ice and snow. We moved from North Carolina to here in the panhandle of Florida last year, after two ice storms in a row and the last one caused a tree top to fall on her car and totaled it. One of these days I will probably move back up north.

Thank you for your comment about my photo.

Thanx, Marcos, I really like my Arbutus series myself. I was looking in my Favorites just a minute ago and it seems I like to both take and see macros, I guess because they invite new views of the little things all around us that most folks don't notice. Thank you for taking the time to comment on my shot. Now I'm gonna go look at YOUR shots...

Felipe Against the Light
Milton fenomenon Mystery Mountains

Thanx, guys! I looked at both your work and I really enjoyed the peek. Felipe, your "Against the Light" is a beautiful sunset landscape, with the reflecting pool separated by the sihouettes. And Milton, you belie your youth with such breathtaking shots as the ghostly "fenomenon" and "Mystery Mountains"
