Ok Larry . . . well thought out. But you can still retain the height effect and lose the sky (see attached) . . . though to my eye the image is not as strong as it could be. You're right about the trade offs. On your side, though, I have seen a number of OUTSTANDING shots get passed over for awards. I think losing the blown out portions of any shot would be a serious consideration if it's awards you seek. But I'd recommend against that . . . just get better . . . awards will follow - or, at least - quality work you can rightly brag about! I have attached a taller example without the blownout sky for your additional consideration. By the way . . . this shot is a great example of what I mean about quality. I truly think this would be a good one to show off, award or not.

Thanks Doyle for your very insightful comments. I can see your interpretation. I was going for a dreamlike appearance, hence the backlit blown-out sky and the photoshop-enhanced peripheral soft focus to bring the eye back to center. I strongly considered eliminating the too bright sky but chose to keep it to retain the height effect. It seems that photography is always a series of trade offs. The photos that aren't - win prizes. I'm still looking for the prize winner... Thanks again, Larry

Very nice and mysterious mountainside. I like the colours in the sky but would work up a little more brightness and contrast in the foreground - if you enjoy experimenting with these variable. Eb

Larry, just persued your portfolio, and you have some very interesting images. I like this image but would probably have moved to the right a tad to eliminate the tree overlaying the green foilage in the back and possibly picking up more of the shadow on the road. It still is a good image.

Hi Larry! This is an excellent use of shutterspeed to get a good effect. To much usually blurs it too badly to show the power and flow - and too little makes it appear unintentionally soft. This seems to have split the difference nicely and the effect on the water is very good.
My opinion, though, is that the composition could be improved. The fleeting glimpse of sky in this shot . . . in the center, top of the image . . . is blown out and the lack of detail makes it a needless distraction. My first thought was drop the crop to cut it (through the foliage and into the rock) but leave in the entire waterfall.
On looking though - (all my opinion, mind you) - the focal clarity . . . possibly due to the DOF is very soft at the upper side of the falls. Plus, I felt the height of the falls seemd to emphasize a centrality to the subject and make for a more static composition . . . So I looked into a much bolder crop (example attached for your consideration).
I think you have a great shot here. . . . the rocks, colors and textures . . . in the lower portion due to the improved clarity -- are awesome. I think a bolder cut would show them off better . . . and portray a truly tranquil, peaceful scene.
Anyway . . . just something for you to consider!! :)

I really like the effect in the foreground... you've got the blurry water thing going on, but unlike a lot of mine, it's not so motion blurred that you actually lose the the motion feeling.

Dear Mary Sue, Hi again. I love your comments, very insightful. In a shot like this it is very important, when shooting digitally to underexpose slightly so as not to blow out the highlights. This can be analyzed, on site, by checking a histogram or a highlight clipping window. Then, in Photoshop, curves can be adjusted to bring up shadow details which have much greater lattitude. Alternatively, once highlights are clipped they cannot be restored. Yes, this was shot on a cloudy & misty morning which helped smooth out the contrast. If you have any other questions, let me know. Larry

Dear Mary Sue, The starbursts are real... sort of. I'm not sure why but whenever a digital chip (or at least my kind of chip in the D100 is focused on a bright point source (e.g. the small sun in a wide angle shot) a starburst pattern forms. This doesn't happen in film and is similar to the old crosshatch etched starburst filter effect. Good question. Larry

A photo that I would surely try to get if it would only freeze here...we had snow last year, so we probably aren't due for a while.
Did you use a filter or some PS action to get the little starbursts or is that a natural function of the lens and light refracting through the ice?

Larry, you captured what I have found so difficult: to get a proper exposure when the white surf crashes against dark black rocks. This was particularly true for me in Hawaii where the sun was so bright that the white caps were nearly flourescent-bright.
I am not sure if this was shot on an overcast day (it appears so). If so, it probably helped temper the contrast in a good way.
I like the pano-style framing and subtle diagonals. You show strong wave action...can only imagine what it would look like if the seas were really in high gear!
