Thanx Pat- I used a 420ex flash covered with a diffuser and mounted on a bracket. I seem to always use some fill flash in my macros for that extra bit of detail that you speak of. I also used a 2xTC and 20mm ext tubes before the 100mm lens. And this image was cropped a bit for web presentation.

Thanx to all for the kind words on this image.

Marcus- the lens listed is wrong. I used the canon 100mm 2.8 Macro with a tamron 2xTC in front of it as well as some extension tubes and a 500D closeup filter after the 100mm macro lens. This was one very tiny bug. The canon macro lens is wonderful.

Hi Mark, I really am in love with your macros, I want to start taking macro shots like this myself, of try to , I have a couple of questions I would be thankful If you could answer for me, first of all I see you are using the Canon 100mm F/2 USM, I thought that was not a macro lens, I was thinking of purchasing the canon 100mm 2.8 Macro, now I am confused, can you tell me which lens would be my best choice and the differences, any other tips would be appreciated, I know this really belongs in a forum, but I love your shots and would like to get some information from a expert..
Thanks in advance..
Marcus..

Superb portrait! Compositing different planes of focus to increase depth of field is an inspiring idea - I will try it with film and software.

David

WOW!! One of the best macros I've seen, this is absolutely incredible! The drop/bubble almost looks as it there is something in it, a reflection. Fantastic composition as well.

I've made it a favorite, so now 4 people have this as a fav!!

I didn't really want to look - he looked pretty scary from the thumbnail. It is a fantastic macro. the colours and detail are amazing for such a tiny thing. One thing did make me smile - From the face part, the stripey bits look like the two speakers either side of a jazzy radio/cd player!!!!!!!
