The model seems caught unawares, literally "with his pants down." Like so many of Mister Caldwell's shots, this seems like a still from a movie, with implications buzzing.

Well, talk about "the look of love." Somehow seventies, because of the cap.

Oh, for how many centuries painters and sculptors tried to capture just this sort of springy moment, before photorgaphy and Mister Caldwell's eye caught it for us.

The outfit seems silly to me, so on one level the photo doesn't appeal, but as a composition of colors and forms in space, it works delightfully.

That upward lighting brings out the imp in the model.

Another example of Mister Caldwell's ability to find the "star personality" in a model.

Oh, gods, how beautiful. This is what art is all about. This is why we want to see the world through someone's eyes rather than just as it is.

Another enigmatic, unforgettable production still from Mister Caldwell's interior movie. I sure would like to see that movie.

What a mutitude of metaphors! Is our flag just a rag? Is it hung on something?

This whole series looks like snapshots Caravaggio or some such Renaissance or Baroque artist might have made to refer to for paintings of saints.

Strange conflation of references and resonances in a striking image.

Well, wouldn't THIS ferocious image knock 'em for a loop in the Louvre! The figure POPS out of the space, right at you!

Another of Mister Caldwell's "star-making" photos, treating the model like a famous personality.

Wel, Ray may be relaxed, but I doubt that any other man seeing this adroit piece of erotica is.

Just about sensuous and inviting, isn't it? Wouldn't you say?

Another great homage to underwear posters!

Another handsome "star" portrait, treating the subject with Mister Caldwell's trademarked generosity and warmth.

Another glossy, perfectly professional dorm-room wall clothing poster, this one, I suppose, for shirts. Surrrrrrrrre it is. (Embed smilie face here.)

Critique By: Robert Patrick  (K:8337)
1/19/2008 6:06:41 PM

Ha! Looks like an udnerwear poster, and a VERY commercial one at that! I'm sure it would grace the walls of dorm rooms world-wide.

This is so strong, so moving, it needs no comment. All I can say is that once again Mister Caldwell's exploration of his means leads him to a point resembling 1930's journalistic photography. He gives his subject the monumental dignity portraitists strove for then.

When faced with an unusual or picturesque subject, be straightforward, I always say, and let the viewer check out the elements one by one, top to bottom! It surely works in this case.

Critique By: Robert Patrick  (K:8337)
12/28/2007 5:55:42 PM

I can't tell if the model is thrilled to be allowed to get out of that Spandex, or if he's dubious of what might await him next, but the complexity of his emotion is certainly captured, and in a vivid baroque shape against that velvety void.

Critique By: Robert Patrick  (K:8337)
12/28/2007 5:52:12 PM

Mister Caldwell's sensitivity to the beauty of such mundane sights as this and their photographic possibilities transport one to the very earliest days of photography, when all was wonder and discovery.

Critique By: Robert Patrick  (K:8337)
12/28/2007 5:50:30 PM

Were this not THE most adorable cat in the world, I should be angry with Mister Caldwell for posting Kute Pet Piktures, however well-composed.

Troubled and/or acrobatic. Interesting "3-D" effect with the elbows, worth analyzing and pursuing.

Well, THAT's a bold flash of slate gray, black, red-brown, and blue!

Fantastic stories expressed only by footprints. Perhaps a dance-class called on account of snow? A spontanous game of commuter Twister? An interrupted convention of invisible men?

Critique By: Robert Patrick  (K:8337)
11/28/2007 4:11:14 PM

Odd observation of a human body, the sort of strange angle one usually knows only of a lover.

Mister Caldwell's portraits so bring out each sitter's personality that they always seem like celebrity photos. This one looks like it could go on a commemorative stamp for the gentleman.

X marks the spot? Very interesting compositional dynamics in a subject handled unusually. If this is a jump for joy, the somber lighting doesn't covney that. It's almost like he's jumped up in terror because a spotlight hit him--or is he jumping to attract attention because he's lost and someone's found him?
