Nothing beats the real thing but did you know that you can simulate the IR effect to any RGB image in Photoshop using Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Channel Mixer (click monochrome box). Start by sliding the red channel then adjust the geen and blue (recommended starting point is red: -30, green: +200, blue: -70 for a total of 100).

You should also add DIFFUSE GLOW, which is found under Filter - distort. This will give the image those trademark "dreamy" halos of light around highlights. You may also want to add NOISE, also from the FILTER menu, to simulate film grain.

If you are really Photoshop-savvy you can set this up as an Action. This simulated effect may not be as dramatic in areas like the sky and in skin tones but it works well on trees, grass, any foliage. Keep in mind that you want any water to appear as black.

Thanks for the comments. I really wish I knew how to "solve" the blurry effect that I?ve encountered when using an IR filter. I?ve tried making adjustments in aperture and shutter speeds but I think it has more to do with the IR light being reflected off the object and into the camera lens. ...but I could be wrong. Another possibility is that my camera may not be as IR friendly as other digital cameras are known to be.

Since this is only my second outing with an IR filter, I?m hoping someone who has more time behind the shutter can enlighten/educate me. Beverly Gustafson?s work [http://www.usefilm.com/showphoto.php?id=25972] in IR photography is one of MANY such "mentors" out there...

Wow! The clouds in this photograph are very nice! I love the reflections in the water, the sepia, everything! The two poles or structures in the center and very interesting. The only thing that was a little odd is the movement or blurryness in the bottom right. Everything else is beautiful!

Hoi Raymond,
I'm glad that your parents like the picture, of course it's alright that they put the picture on their screen. I took the picture in Heemstede a little village near Amsterdam.
You too do a great work with you pictures.
Regards,
Peter de Haan

Steven, from all that I?ve read (so far) regarding digital and IR, it says to always shoot in standard ?color? mode. I guess the thought is that you can always convert the image to black and white in the digital darkroom later on. What I?ve also read is that you can adjust the WB settings on various cameras to achieve different colorations in the IR image. From what I?ve tried so far, shooting in B/W mode will achieve this same effect (what I?ve posted).

Seeing how this is my first outing with an IR filter, I?ll continue shooting in the standard color mode just so I have more image flexibility later on when it comes to the saturation/hue, etc. Maybe someone who has more experience with IR photography can shed more light on the subject.

I much prefer this over the color shot. A more classical presentation. I'm curious about digital and IR filters. Is it common to take the original shot in color mode then covert to B&W in editing software. Do you get a different effect if the original is taken in B&W mode with this filter?

Yes, I like this one a lot more... I've never used IR Film or an IR filter, but I like the final presentation of this one. Very stormy looking sky, more so with the IR filter.

Todd, yes, I used my Circ PL to try and give some added saturation to the colors as well as darken the sky. The sky was already pretty much as you see it here it?s just that I wanted to ensure there was enough contrast between the clouds and the sky.

The link to Don Holman's photograph in my reply didn't go as I had hoped it would. Perhaps this'll work:

I wish it were an original idea of mine to shoot these. I took my lead from Donald Holman and his photograph [image 106262]. Donald and I work at the same place where he shoots with film and I shoot with digital. I guess it's the only acceptable form of a shooting rampage in any workplace environment...

Thanks everyone...I know what you mean, Donald. I walked around for several days looking at each press. In fact, there were times when I was on the floor looking up at them seeing what perspective I could shoot. Think of the looks I got from the Pressmen. I think in a two day period I took almost 20 shots of the presses and settled on this one. I'm still looking at shooting the rest of the press but like you say, it's hard to get the rest of the levels into perspective. I smell a challenge.

Great shot, Ray. Love the composition and angle. The reflection in the floor really adds to this one- gives it interest throughout the entire shot. Amazing how clean the press looks in b&w. I've been trying to figure out a way to shoot the press to show how huge they actually are (hard to get even 3 of the levels into a good composition, not even mentioning getting all 4).

I stand corrected on the size of the paper rolls. I went back this morning and checked on the sizes of the various rolls and they weigh in between 1,240 lbs (562kg) and 2,500 lbs (1134kg).

It's a good thing you do get bored at work if you can compensate your time by taking images like this one! Can't you sell it to the company? Now that's enterprise for you!
Great picture by the way.
