About
Despite a bumper salt harvest this year, farmers in the Vietnam are worried about their livelihoods as the price of salt continues its five-year decline.
In the coastal provinces previously mentioned, more than 100,000 tonnes of salt have been left unsold.
Although salt farmers work hard in the scorching sun all the day, the falling price of their commodity and the increase in the cost of production materials and daily essentials prevent them from earning enough to support themselves.
Worried about their unstable future, many traditional salt farmers have abandoned their marshes and turned to breeding shrimps to make a living.
At the moment the Vietnamese salt industry buys only 40 per cent of the country?s salt output, due to the low capacity of salt processing enterprises as well as the poor quality of local salt products.
