Dear Robert,
I think this strong picture will getting stronger if you add more contrast on the walking man. I suspect the dog behind is his, thus might enhance the relationship between them...Really nice composition and BW street photo. I like it. Here I attached my version with adding a little dodging and burning...I hope you don't mind.

Nice street scene,are right your intention(darkening for contrast),but I think that the men are important to the composition and could had been a little more lit.Hug
