About
On September 28, 2003, my wife, who took this picture, and I visited the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC where we saw an exhibit ?Beyond the Frame: Impressionism Revisited, the Sculptures of J. Seward Johnson, Jr.?. < http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/4aa/4aa87.htm>
Johnson had created 18 walk-in sculptures from Impressionist paintings. Visitors to the gallery were invited to enter the sculpture/painting and view it from a another perspective, the inside. The sides that were invisible from the front were clearly visible but gave the viewer a different perspective.
One by-product is that the visitors spent considerably more time looking at the statue then they would have, in general, in looking at the painting. They also were having fun.
This statue, Vincent van Goth?s ?The Bedroom? is true to the painting, at least from the outside and when I went in, having seen the original painting in the past, the experience was eerie and very enjoyable, for example seeing the other side of the bed board made a difference, somehow.
If you ever get a chance to see this exhibit, I recommend it. I would like to find a way to make my photographs this enjoyable.
Your story is fascinating. Are you talking about the artist that does life like sculpture who at first and second glance look like real people just doing ordinary things? Very good photograph.
Bob - thanks for your forum comments on uploading images - I think I have mastered the use of the Roxio Photosuite 5 so far - my next photo upload 'Red Sails' will show you what I have achieved so far - I would enjoy hearing your comments - Thanks for info and sharing Jeff Nearly forgot - this is a real fun picture - I like it a lot.
Samantha, good point. If I get another chance I would frame the photograph from within the room, possibly looking out but more likely at the table, while sitting on the chair. Giving a different perspective. The neat thing about the J. Seward Johnson work is that a photographer can imerse into the work and come up with a different view
Though this is an amazing idea, which I love, I would have made the subject more unintrusive, less of a "here I am in this cool room...and more "I live here, and belong here..." thanks for listening..
