Ryan, Thanks for your comments. I've decided that there are 3 things that I particularly like about this one: The light pollution came out as purple, not orange the way mine always does. The Big Dipper jumps right out at you, even if your not an astronomer. Last but not least, I love that this particular section of sky accentuates the differences in star trail lengths as you move south. A very cool picture!

There's a lot of light pollution where I live in NJ, but I was on vacation in Canada when I took this picture. Stratford is only slightly north of the great lakes. The Earth's axis is pointed at the north star, Polaris. So if you aim your camera due north, you get that circular effect. The faint line is an airplane, kind of hard to avoid these days.

Yea, am a lot older, 56' Chevy...LOL. Ok, not much on star watching, where I live (south florida)you never really get to see much because of the city lights...I am suprised by the full circle pattern, I would think you would have to pretty close to the poles for that.(Not really sure where Stratford is) I also see a faint line running left to right slightly going upward, satelite? That's a heck of an exposure!

Great capture Ryan - do a search for Nigel Smith on here, he is a good friend of mine and is also very interested in astrophotography :-)

Thanks Jon. Yes, the town center of Stratford was to the west in this picture, hence the light pollution from that direction.

Very nice... I take it that the bright area to the left is city lights?
