Yes, that's what I meant by "halation." I know all about using beat-up equipment, though. But one good thing arising from the rush towards digital cameras is that a lot of really fine conventional darkroom equipment is flooding onto the second hand market. Stuff I could only dream about years ago is going for a song! So if you stick with it, there'll be no great financial burden to upgrading.

Roger- I'm not sure what is causing this effect. To be honest, I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out. Because the white petals are more crowded in that area maybe the combined glare is wahing out the focus somewhat? The only other thing I can think of is the paper holder I was using with the enlarger in class might have been a little bent, some of the equipment there is pretty banged up.

Michael, I notice a rather strange effect here. There seems to be an area (the white petals/leaves on the left of the main part of the tree) that are in slightly softer focus, with things both further away AND nearer being sharper. The dark petals/leaves on the top are fine, and so are the long spiky leaves. I thought it might be halation, but I'm guessing the negative was not held completely parallel to the carrier. Of course it's difficult to tell on the screen. Please tell me if I'm imagining it. That said, this is a great subject for a B&W photo, with a very interesting range of tones and shapes.
