About Rather too much of a bulls-eye happy snap, but the trouble I had to get this shot! Animals and children...neither ever do what you want them to do. Comments VERY much appreciated. How should I have altered the composition and lighting?

Hi James and thanks a lot about your critique to my shot "Children".
I think you maybe right when you believe that the dog can be cut from the shot even if the dog adds the frame a kind of rural situation typical of the environment.
But, last and not least, keep in mind that I was not in a studio where everything can be controlled and every dust can be removed, I was in a street in Kathmandu, and every second lost could mean an expression of the children lost forever.
So, thank you again for your critiques (I need them to improve my works) and I hope you will have more time to take a look at some of the others of my portfolio. Regards, Marco

What a cute couple of heartbreakers someday. They look so natural. I like the picture. The background is great. Don

I'd like to see this in b&w as well.
I also think that if you got on your knees and zoomed in on those expressions it would speak to the viewer more.

This is a very sweet photo. I know exactly how you felt to get these girls on film. I have an image with several young children in my portfolio. Getting them to look at the camera at one time is one thing. Having them smile while looking is quite another. You''ve shown that you don't necesarily need either.

As for criticism: You could have use a little fill flash to open up the shadows under their eyes. I'd like to see the all the girls' hands. Especially the one with the fingers cropped. Especially with kids, the fingertips are important in portraiture. I try not to show girls' underwear (or diaper/nappy/whatever) but it's often unavoidable. I watched a school program once where the girl played with her dress the entire time -- usually over her head. Yes, it's funny but usually the parents want to see their child's face when getting a portrait. ;-)

I think that the lighting is nice, light and although the background is brighter, you've still got nice exposure on the girls faces. The composition I'm not too keen on, but it took me a while to think of something that would eliminate the greenery but not totally centre the girls. Not sure if I'm happy with my attachment, but it gives a different perspective.
And yes, if children are anything like shooting animals, I have sympathy for you!
