About Aside from the obvious tilted horizon, I was on a ferry, my main quesion is about the washed out colors in the water and sky. Would a polarizer have helped? I haven't used filters before so I'm still learning what to use and when to use it.

Thanks everyone for the comments, every little bit helps. Steve, I wish I could take the ferry at a different time of day, unfortunately this was shot on Lake Erie when on vacation and I live near St. Louis. I'll just have to find a willing subject around here. Wim, I agree. After looking at it the face could be a little clearer. Priyadarshi, thanks!

Nice capture. I know how difficult it is to get them in the right moment! Maybe a bit more focus (head/eye area)would have helped. Just my opinion.

John, a polarizer will work the most when you are photographing at 90? angle from the sun. In this case, it wouldn't do much for you other than cutting out some of the light. The sky is probably washed out because of the time of the day. If you can try again on an early or evening ferry trip when the light is lower, I think you will be happier with the results.
