About I was asked to take a picture of this young man for a CD label. He wanted something similar to an old photograph he has of Hank Williams, Sr., his musical idol. I studied the photograph in question, then studied other portraits from that time, and noticed that probably the most noticeable feature of these old pictures, besides the particular style of lighting, was their extremely shallow depth of field. I posed him in the manner we needed, lit him the way we needed, then just took the picture. The coloring, vignetting and film grain were produced in Photoshop. This young man is only 16, but I can't help noticing just how much older this particular picture makes him look. I HOPE I achieved the style of photograph he was asking for. Any comments or suggestions? :)

Growing up we had Hank Williams, Sr albums around the house...when I saw this shot I thought immediately of them. This is excellent and I bet he just loves it. Thank you so much for your thoughts on my Carly Dancing picture. :)

I guess I should change my name to Curmudgeon. Basically, I think it's a super photo, one that the requester should adore. My only quibble is with the uneven darknesses of the corners. The lower left looks a tad too dark and the lower right a tad too light.

Living in Nashville, I have seen more than my share of headshots of country stars (and wannabes). This is everything you were going for and is up there at the top in this peculiar genre.

Excellent examination of aged vogue. Was the vignette in that style?
Intriguing that a sixteen year old should wish it but this looks terrific. Fresh face honest howdy folks.

I think it's perfect. The picture looks old and he looks gorgeous. You did an excellent job. Perfect angle, his eyes are right and the tones are right on.

When i saw the thumbnail i thought of Hank Williams even though I'm not familiar with the country music scene. It was the color tones as well as the way he's leaning into the shot. I really like the images that creates a trip down history lane and this one really doeas with the blurry edges. Really really good.

I hope that this man lives his life a little less destructive than Hank williams.

Samantha,

You did a beautiful job on your rendition of this picture. The color is more the way I had originally envisioned making the one I posted, but the more I played with the color to get it to a point where Matthew said, 'That's it. That's the way I want it to look,' the more saturated and almost parody-like it became. However, I have to do what makes my clients happy. Again, I REALLY like your version. :)

Ron,

Thank you for your kind comment. Though this picture was done in a rather old and by-today's-standards-uninventive manner, it's what my client wanted, and it was a good learning experience for me. I've never been asked to produce a picture like this before, and now I think I know how to do it. I think my technique may need some tweaking, but that's why I posted it here...to get suggestions for doing just that. :)

Hi again. I decided to play with this image. I tried to make the actual cover in 40s style. I like how it came out.

*GASP* Ok.. that odd! He looks SO MUCH like my fiance. WOW! Anyway, I love how it looks. the old age look makes him look almost mysterious!

The attached image is a small copy of the finished cover. Not much more to it...just text. But, I thought I'd post it anyway. :)
