About After reading Chris' comment that this image would do well in black and white, I got right into PS and worked on it. I like it so much better this way! Why didn't I think of it?!

Amy,

Sure, dodge the area a bit to bring out the detail and the darken the photo.

Hey, Chris! That mill is in Washington County down here in southern Indiana. Sue was telling me about the Chicago gathering - I think we should do one down here! I'm sure there are plenty of old barns, abandoned mills, etc to go around. :)

Glad you like the sepia! I could have smacked my own forehead for not seeing that before. I looked at it a little darker, but didn't like losing detail under the porch. Maybe I should play in PS a little more and only darken the parts that aren't under the porch. Do you think that would work?

the image is nice, but the light is draining out of the frame for me. Add a black boarder to the image and it will proabably look much better. Also a little tiny bit more contrast may help.

I like this i b&w i also liked the color version i still think you could move in closer and shoot all the detailed stuff the gas pump etc.

Amy,

It does work tons better in B&W, I like the sepia toning. I think it could be darkened a bit but that's just a personal preference.

Well done Amy!

Here's my sad attempt at the mill, Amy! You should go! It has an eastern face to it, so a morning exposure would be marvelous.

We were caving with a troop of Boy Scouts and we couldn't get away early to go for the warmer light. That, and I had the crummy camera with me.

Sue, how do you know these places in southern Indiana?! This is just the other side of the rise - the steep rock wall is behind it. I'm attaching a picture I took of the rise.

If you're coming this way, maybe we could get together and work on that mill. You've got me ready to go hunting for it!

So great to hear from you!
Amy

Hey! Is that near the Rise? How cool! What a marvelous area!

Looks like Chris's suggestion worked beautifully. And this is one of those situations where sepia is much better than straight B&W!

You're in Paoli? South of Salem is the town of Beck's Mill with a wonderful old abandoned mill that I know you could work wonders with! (My attempts were pretty pathetic!) If you get over there, I hope you will post. I'd love to see it.

The color version of this image was good, but this one is superb, the sepia adds to the sense of age. Happy shooting.
