Jake-
Agree'd showing the source of the takeoff and landing can be a good thing. The buildings you're showing don't have anything to do with that :)
If you're showing the size of the pipe, get the boarder back a bit. He makes it look small. The pipe is less than 2X his height. The buildings don't really help that. If he was back further, maybe.
If you're showing the action, loose the buildings. They have nothing to do with the shot.
This shot as is makes both possible subjects look small. Take it with a grain of salt :) It's not a bad photo Jake, your perspective could just be better.

Hi Jake,
Sorry, I thought you were trying to show the "action" instead of the height. I agree that showing the buildings would work if they were "interesting", but these buildings aren't anything special, and they seem to distract. My eye seems to go to them first, THEN to the snowboarder.
I agree with what Daniel said. The "air" doesn't seem to be very large and if that's what you are going for, then as he said, shooting in front and up more might be what you need.

Daniel, that photo would be excellent if it was for a sponsor, or advertising a certain thing he was wearing/riding. take a look at this, these are ALL professional snowboarding photographers, and every single photo there shows the source of take off/landing

the photo you gave me has hardly any action, it just shows someone in the air with a blue backround, i could have a photographer lay on the ground and me jump up off a 2 foot ramp and get a shot just like that one, and people would think it was huge, which it really is not.

Jake-
Take a look at this shot.

It's just a shot of a boarder. Only the boarder... It's an action shot like yours, though it's a frontside instead of a backside as you show. Note how big his air looks. You take an action shot, we assume you're trying to show the action off.

i think the building adds more of a 'story' as some would say. if the building was not in there, you would not be able to tell how big the ramp is, this may not impress non-snowboarders, but for many snowboarders, they say that the building is a good part. i just think that if it was just him it would be a bit boring.

Jake-
You caught a trick with air, big improvement over your other action shots. The spray and slight blur of your subject shows good movement.
Mia and Alisa are right, the buildings create a distraction and probably shouldn't be part of the shot. If you want Andy's backside method to look larger than life, get closer and shoot up more. This specific shot makes me feel like the pipe is fairly big, but his air is small. The distance between the board and the slope looks to be about the same distance as his foot to his knee. If he's "normal" sized that's only about a foot and a half. I'm sure that's not the type of air you (or he) was looking for.
All things equal, this is a big improvement. Keep it up.

i honestly dont see how that helps the photo at all. i think the lodge in the backround gives the ramp a sense or height

Hi Jake,
I'm certainly no expert, but a tighter crop might be nice on this pic...
