About I'd be grateful if somebody could give me some tips on how to take a sports shot like this in focus - thanks.

Hi Simon,
Thanks for the tips, will give it a go.
I won't be able to use flash though as it is not permitted during competitions. It could easily distract the gymnasts and they might injure themselves.
So very tricky to capture fast movements in low light.
Thanks again! Regards Vera

The centre of focus was on the acrobat. The depth of field did not cover the space between her and the background, so try a smaller apperature which means a slower shutter speed.

On the other hand a faster shutter speed would have meant less movement blur if you don't mind the background fading into lack of focus.

Panning with the acrobat will help lessen blur in the main body area but if the arms and legs are moving, slower shutter speeds will lose them to an extent, and the backround will get the same motion blur as the acrobat is currently getting.

Using flash will freeze the foreground object and if you keep the shutter open for longer to allow ambient light to expose for the background, you can still use a small apperature and freeze foreground movement. There will however be some movement blur as the acrobet continues to move after the flash has flashed. It's not something I've done myself too much, it's not the strictly technically correct way of doing it either, but can give interesting results.

Ok?
Simon
