Thawing I see. If the sense of vignette is done with burn it is subtly done, either way it suggests something about the landscape beyond this scene to me (light through trees).

Ha Martin, the details of the thawing ice, including the structure of the crystals and the dull tone are extremely well captured. it's the gradient from dark grey to near white and the black tones around the reed that do the trick, I think. Good composition, too, with the stubs of reed. I wonder if you also took this shot in portrait format, as I think it might create a more unusual and powerful image. Just a thought, it would be interesting to see the difference.
