About The mysterious 'cup and ring' markings, on sandstone, on remote Northumberland moorland. About 2 feet, (60cm) across.

These ancient marking must have taken great effort, with flint or copper tools. They are very common in the lower hills, to the east of the Cheviot range in Northumberland (border hills, between England and Scotland).

Cup and ring markings are about 4 to 5 thousand years old, and their symbolism remains a mystery.

Taken with the setting sun, giving oblique rays, to throw these carvings into sharp relief.

Thank you for your visit, dear Colin. Recently I have not had much time to spend of UF but I miss my friends from there. Anyway, this is a great pic, the texture and the technical perfection well conveys the mystical aura of this ancient carving. Congratulations: Gyuri

It looks like you had some lovely warm sunlight to highlight and shadow the engravings nicely.
I think I would like to have seen more - in that never having been there, I don't know if this is a stone that is part of an old building - or just sat in a field - so some background to help me put the carving into context would have been nice, and would hold a viewers interest for longer.

Colin such an excellent composition, the light on the stone brings out all sorts of colours and tones. You have captured the textured so well I feel I want to reach out and feel it.
Margaret
I understand a forum thread you added to has also been deleted, same here regarding so many leaving volunatarily or note. But at least I haven't been blocked [kicked off] altogether like others have

Fascinating 'about' and a great image, Colin...excellent texture and details, and the lighting really adds to the mystery. It truly looks ancient. Resembles the eye of a great beast...Smaug perhaps? or could it possibly be...GRENDEL?!! *grin*

Beautiful & mysterious, Colin. The oblique lighting makes the figure appear 3 dimensional.
Thank you for your kind comment on my "Propagation." I thought you might want to know the origin of the ogres. So here it is:

Bob. Any good Ordnance Survey map, will indicate where 'cup and ring' carvings are located.

In north, Northumberland, there is a greater concentration than any where else in Britain. My own theory is that these were carved when Milfield plain was still a lake, and a major fishing area (5000+ years ago)

Thanks for the comment, Bob. Appreciate it!
