This is from a recent series of photos from a camping trip near Narooma on the south coast of NSW in Australia, this photogenic youngster (4 feet long) has taken to camp life quite well, he was not afraid of us bipeds at all, though if startled he did make a bee line for something tall.. note to new players, don't be the closest tallest thing around for startled goannas.. see the claws on these things???
I love the goannas we have here in Oz! I think this fella is a Lace Monitor (Varanus varius). Here in Broome, where I am for the next couple of months, there are several species, including the beautiful Freckled Monitor (see photo).
I have to agree, the crop is a bit tight bottom RHS.
Best wishes, from a fellow *ist-D(S) user. I only got my new camera recently, so am still getting familiar! Do you have the original *ist-D?
Hi Chris, if this is the Perentie Goanna (only two have the distinctive yellow spots in tiger stripes that i have seen) then it can grow to 2 and a half meters, or about 8 feet (second largest lizard behind the Komodo dragon), it could be a rosenburg, which is significantly smaller but it is out of its known range..
Perfect capture of this did-you-say "youngster", Mike? How long are the adults then?!!!! You wouldn't catch me camping out in a place where those kind of animals were prowling around!! Best regards, Chris
Nice eye contact with this fellow! Funny with those horizontal lines on the subject and the vertical ones on the tree :) The crop seems to be a bit tight at the bottom, but still a nice capture!
