It's easy and very effective. Just click layers/new adjustment layer/curves, when the curves dialog pops up pull the top right lower to darken the image. then click OK now where ever you paint black will lighten the image. It's best to use a soft brush with the opacity set to 50%. In reverse, where ever you paint white will re darken the image.. give it a whirl.. have fun...

Yes, your hair is great but you need to accent your eyes. You got some nice ones and you should take advantage of them. A bit of selective sharpening and bring out those whites and then a curves layer mask to help bring atenntion to them...
