This is Goldie. She is not a very photogenic dog, however the dramatic light of the sun setting worked good with the color of her fur. I am trying my hand at some portraits of our dogs. Advice greatly appreciated
How can you say that face isn't photogenic? She's adorable! I started trying to take serious dog portraits with my Goldens about a 1 1/2, 2 years ago... I noticed that a lot of my shots were like this one... a cute dog with nice light, but not stellar. This is a nice shot, but it feels more like a documentary, more snapshot. To get more of a pro portrait feel try using a shallower depth of field to separate your dog from the background. I like to use nothing more than f5.6 if possible as it lets the dog be in focus but nicely blurs the background. If you look through my portfolio you will see my progress from snapshot http://www.usefilm.com/image/154390.html to more recent shots of the puppies. If your Golden likes getting her picture taken use it to your advantage and test out different angles, different lighting, different DOF. You're shooting digital so film waste won't be a problem. If you can't control the DOF with your camera you can always try moving your dog away from distracting background object (like the white fence) and having a more monotone bg... green grass and a green hedge would work nicely. Most of all, have fun and make sure Goldie is having fun as well, so she'll want to pose for you more often! Cheers
