About
The old Croatian free and royal city of Varazdin, see of the Varazdin Diocese, known as a city of flowers, music and baroque style, was first mentioned in historical documents in the year 1181. A settlement gradually developed along the fortress (present-day Old Town). The privileges of a free royal town were acquired from a bull issued by King Andreas II in 1209 and confirmed by King Béla IV in 1220. Throughout history, it has been in the possession of several aristocratic families: Celjski, Frankopan, Erdödy and others. The strongest cultural movements in Varazdin were felt during the periods of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. With the arrival of the Jesuits in 1636, a secondary school and the Zakmardi School were opened, churches and Jesuit residences were built, and the city acquired many baroque features. In the 18th century, Varazdin was the residence of many aristocratic Croatian families ? Draskovic, Keglevic, Patacic, Sermage and others. The most brilliant period of that city was from 1767 to 1776, when it was the capital of Croatia. In 1776, a fire destroyed much of this brilliance, so that the center of administrative and political life was returned to Zagreb.
