Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church is built upon the site called Abitation built by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. In 1683, the governor and the administrator grant part of the site to the bishop for the building of a chapel and a rectory. The building of the chapel whose façade will overlook the market place starts in 1687 upon plans drawn by architect Claude Baillif. During its construction, the church will twice be renamed. First called ?Enfant-Jésus? when the first stone was laid, the chapel was renamed ?Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire? (Our Lady of the Victory) after the retreat of Admiral William Phipps's fleet in 1690. Twenty one years later, after the shipwreck of the English fleet commanded by Admiral Hovender Walker, the church was again renamed ?Notre-Dame-des-Victoires? (Our Lady of Victories). The parish will be legally erected only in 1944.
