Thank you David for your comment. I like both versions. But I agree with you that the original has a smoother touch and makes the girl appear more welcoming and attentive. The high contrast one accentuates her beauty but looses the dreamlike quality as you very well described it. Thanks for your comment,

I like it the way it is.
The low contrast and softness give an old world dreamlike quality.
Plus its a beautiful portrait as well.

Luis, I'm glad you liked my version... what I did was very simple. Using gimp (www.gimp.org) I adjusted levels with the "auto set" function, then I trimmed the black color against the woman's hair, and that was it! :-)

Mmm the effect is nice, but maybe you should have either decreased or increased the tones on her face... IMHO the paper texture should have been either more homogeneous with her face or well separated from it. It's just my opinion :-)
I tried to make "my" version of it...
