Your composition here is very effective. The shadows give it great depth, and the slight centering of the subject works well. Great job.

Some folks will nitpick at everything. "To each his own." I think this tree is exactly at the right spot in this scene. The rules of thirds and other such rules just get in the way of creativity. By throwing out the rule book, you created a very strong image.

As a fan of yours, I know you have a post titled "Bewitched" so now we need one titled "Bothered." :-))

I like this one a lot, 7/7
Wonderful nothing more.
The composition, the texture of the grass, the grainy sky, everything, all are amazing.

Hi Rebecca, Very intersting explanation by Tim S. I have to agre with him in general lines, but another part of me feels the weight of the objects in the background is not enough to compensate completely for the centered composition. Nonetheless, he has a point, as the eyes are drawn towards the left, making this shot far from static, and adding the tension.

Still, I think off centering the tree could've worked, but I doubt if placing it more to the left is the solution. If you could've taken a few steps to your right, and panning a bit more to the left (thus placing the tree on the RIGHT) I think the composition would be balanced best. That's a loose cannon comment though, as I'm totally unaware of what's to the left of you...

Cheers,

Hugo

wonderful composition, i dont think the tree needs to be off center in this case because of the weight of all the elements on the left in the backgound. they give it the needed tension and yet allowing for the isolated feel you are going for still.

I think you were absolutely right. The centered one looks lonelier and more at a loss than the other one. I like how it's not completely desaturated. It's very powerful and moody.

I like the look of this one, plum on gray. It has a very eerie feel to it, and the tree has almost a ghostly effect here. Alison

Kind of dark & sad looking, but perhaps with the smallest glimmer of hope. Nice shot. Dottie

Like the washed out treatment but my preference is for the tree on the left...less distraction..in my eyes.

I tried several compositions on this one, Jim. The only shot I had of it off centered was one I did in bw..I'll attach it for you to see. I didn't like it off centered, as to me, it did have a more distinct feeling of isolation as it was. Ordinarily, or in the rule of thirds, I know how it should be. But rules are made to be broken sometimes ;)

Magnificent photo Rebecca!
The sky is a little grainy but that only adds to the mood of the shot!
The lone tree has such a lonely, peaceful feel and the ground has just a hint of teal!
Very nice work Rebecca!
Take care!............JOHN

A very atmospheric image, Rebecca, I somehow knew it was yours just from the thumbnail! Nice toning, and has a very eerie feel to it.
Thanks for your comments!
Dave.

Grim but very pretty. My first thought, like Jim's, was that you might want to move the tree off-center, but on second thought I think the centering emphasizes the tree's isolation.

Another one I knew was yours from the thumbnail. You have a real knack at this type of photo. I enjoy your rural scenes very much. Del.
