Kiz Kulesi, which has become a symbol of Istanbul, was built by the Greek commander Alkibiades in 419 B.C. to guard against enemies coming from the Black Sea. The Byzantine Emperor Komnenos converted this tower into a fortress. Kiz Kulesi was later converted back into a wooden tower by the Ottomans. When this wooden tower burned down, the current stone tower was built during the Ahmet III period (the 18th century).
The Turkish name, "Kiz Kulesi", derives from a legend about a princess who was confined in the tower by her father in order to protect her from the fate foretold by a dire prophecy -- that she would die from the bite of a serpent. However, the princess was eventually bitten by the serpent, which entered the tower in one of the baskets containing supplies that was sent to the princess...
The English name, "Leander's Tower", came from the mistaken notion that Leander drowned there in his attempt to swim the strait to see his lover Hero, although this legendary tragedy actually took place near Abydos in the Hellenspont
i love this one. most people try to make something like this with a statue - i am glad it is a real woman. the towers in the back left compliment the scene so well, and the B+W tones make the thin clouds look like thick sky. beautiful.
