Nice BW howie, I see 20D used...I almost bought one but might have to hold off...very nice shot on this flower!

I use the channel mixer too. I like to make a copy of the image then convert the copy to mode of greyscale so I have a plain BW to compare to. I read a neat trick for some contrast a few months ago. Add a curves channel but don't change anything, then set to overlay and set the opacity so it gives just the right amount of contrast. I really like that way.

A new 30D already ? Wow I wonder how many megapix this will be. Closer to full frame at an affordable price perhaps ?

There was an old 30D which was 3megapixels and they still appear on Ebay (and sell for a good price too).

My wife would kill me if I get a new camera so soon lol

Thanks Stephen for such a kind comment. I was about to plough a lot more money into the Eos 1D MK II but after some advice from people who have both cameras, I opted for the 20D. I hear onthe horizon a new 30D is about to be launched but no specs as yet LOL. Im off to the base of Cader Idris this afternoon see if there is anything worth taking :)

Fantastic capture - wow what a camera ... ISO800 and not a spot of noise. Fabulous floral macro Howie :-)

Best wishes,

Hallo Howie.

I find it hard to always carry a tripod. Most of my shots are from the hip (so to speak). Wonderful Photograph Howie, Great B/W and clarity and Composition.

Thanks for sharing?

Howie - you did a great job without the tripod - very lovely - the water droplets really add so much interest. -- Debby

Thank you Khaled. Desaturate is ok but with channel mixer you get to choose individual channel of colour to use for tone. Here is a quick explanation from one of the many tutorials on the web :)

Super shot Howie, very fresh and beautiful color of the flower. Amazing macro and B/W effect, although I didn't understand the advantages of the channel mixer over the desaturation, yet I'll give it a try to use it.
Great work my friend,
Regards.

The channel mixer is probably the most used way to convert to black and white. You can use all three channels or one or two, then add them up to make 100 and it converts nicely to black and white :)

Its even better in Black and White!!!!! magnificent!!! Maybe u could try decreasing the brightness and increasing the contrast?
whats the difference between using the channel mixer and saturation to turn it into black and white?
