I was in the National portrait Gallery in London looking for inspiration & I bought a book of Richard Avedons exhibition in the gallery around 10 years ago. It inspired me so much I came home and worked on a few portrait ideas which I hope I can develop on. This is one of the first attempts. I was trying to mimic his use of shallow DOF & plain white backgrounds. Looking forward to trying some new styles already.
jeeeez, I wrote a comment on this earlier and it obviously didn't upload - I'm clearly a computer dumb arse. So what did I say.... ummmmmmm... some crap about 28 people looking and not writing anything - I remember that.
Ohh I know - great to hear you looking at others for inspiration. I don't stray much further than UF, with the exception of 40years of Pirelli, so can't comment on the liking of this shot to the work of R Avedons I'm affraid!
So, my thoughs none the less were, like the DOF, crop is bold & strong - kinda fierce boardering on slightly threatening (and I'm saying that after just adding you to my friends list!). One draw was the shoulder (I presume) btm left. It's kinda blury ad spoils the overall finish.
Otherwise - sweet shot.
Ohh yeah - i'd also asked how you went about setting this up? So, can you tell? Good luck with the photography course - I don;t know what St Martins is - I guess some top place in London. I'll keep an eye on your uploads - hence you being the first person into my 'Friends' list! Tell me, what the course about, how many nights/days etc, what you're expecting to get from it. It's all interesting stuff. Rgds Matt
So, no one wants to write about this photo, even after 28 viewers! Glad to see you get out and look for inspiration. I'm too lazy to look at others for inspiration (well outside of UF) but If I knew what you were basing this on it wouold probably help!
It's a pretty fierce & intent look. DOF is top banana, but you could have had a shave!!! The one item that distracts is the 'shoulder' I presume in the btm left. It's kinda blury!
So, how did you set this up? Tripod? Focusing? All questions I wonder myself when messing around with the 20D looking for instant results when there's little else to do! PS - I reckon it's the digital camera that has improved my pics recently. I feel a little more comfortable just shooting - less planning, more spontinaity at no extra cost. It does however mean I can think less about light and just try every available aperture instead - get my drift. Right, I'm talking shit now - this is probably a forum conversation.
