About This shot was my first long exposure star shot. Ever since I have seen Taras R. Hnatyshyn's star shots I was motivated to capture my own...I just started photography in June 2004 and I have many photos which I will be posting. I greatly appreciate comments and suggestions to improve my photography. Thanks for looking!

Max Lyons is producing some very good Star Trail photos captured on digital sensors and processed with his image stacker software. Do a Google on Max Lyons to fine his site. It's well worth a visit. Regards John

Well done Peter, the theory of taking a picture like this is simple enough but the practice of it is another thing but yours has come out well. As Ryan has said for this type of picture a wider angle is preferable as you show more of a circular motion. You may also want to try stopping the lens down an Fstop or 2 as this will allow the stars to show through more before the sky saturates the film. Welcome to use film and I look forward to seeing some more of your work..... Regards Nidge.

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Well, I think it helps to have a digital camera. That way, you can experiment and get results right away. And if it doesn't work, you can erase and do it again. Film is great for star trails, something digital can't do yet. But I think digital cameras are great for learning and experimentation because of the instant results. The LED picture is done in a pitch black room, with a 30 second exposure, I just spun the LED around myself on a string. The light paintings are 10 seconds if I remember correctly, and they involve a lot of spinning myself and the camera. Aperture settings I left up to the camera to decide, I'd just set the camera on "S" mode and pick how long to keep the shutter open. You can do all this stuff with film, but it's very expensive to experiment that way. If you don't have a digital, check out www.dpreview.com, it can help you decide on one to purchase.

hey ryan.
thanks for the input on the star trails. For all I know, your photography is crystal clear and well composed...something Im just learning. Also, you have some very amazing light shots...like the led shot and the wavy light streak shot. I am very interested in learning this type of abstract photography...hints/tips on how to get these effects on film?

Hi Peter, welcome to usefilm, nice star trails. Good choice putting trees in the foreground. I would like to see a wider angle though, did you do any others? The sky looks a little light polluted, are you near a big city? I did some star trail photos in Stratford, Ontario, where it's mostly farmland, so the skies are dark. Please check them out and tell me what you think. And keep those star trails coming!
