Dave: I think she was very intent that I not get any closer to her and her calf. People kept stopping to photograph the pair and she was staying aware of her surroundings.

I guess I'm lucky Jim. The Canon TC seems to mate really well with the 100-400 lens. I'm looking at a 2x TC and a 500mm Canon lens next. I can't afford them but I'm looking. The 100-400 won't autofocus with the 2x TC or I'd already have one. I went through the manual focus routine with my old D60 and my eyes aren't up to it, I guess.

Great detail and color is spot on !
The TC you are using sure matches the lens nicely. It usually tuff to get a TC to work this well with a zoom. Excellent quality
