Eight comments so far ~ you gotta have another one to give you that essential ninth third, Jim, and here it is!!
My old Fuji S602z actually had a built-in thirds grid that you could turn on and off. The Nikon's is totally different and I've yet to work out how it's meant to help in terms of composition.
This is just an excellent shot, full-stop!! The use of the 300mm lens has helped to pull the mountain right in, steepening the gradients and giving an awesome sense of scale.
Well done, as ever!
Kind regards, Chris

There are rules???

Awesome steelblue mountains Jim ... just look at how everything is dwarfed by it.

Lori

Actually that is my point, you hit it right on the head, I want to be known as the guy who doesn't know the rules. I compose and crop by what looks good to me. and yes there are "guidlines" that I stick to. but Love to be different.
thanks fer stoppin by.

That tree sure looks dwarfed by the great mountians in the background. I like it even if it is centered in the lower third. Don.

Rules were made to be broken? I don't know either, Jim, but it's still a fine shot. I like the vertical perspective.
(edit) I guess someone already said that!
Dave.

guess i'm the third one to comment .... is that in the rules? this one is a great photo ... ijust go with what feels good. Just love the blue tint of the background it really zings in contrast to the warmer foreground.

I guess rules were made to be broken, and you did a good job with this one.

What was the subject? first I thougt it was the tree, then I thought it was the house, then I thought it was the mountain, then I thought it was the clouds, NOW I'm conrused.

Good job, nice picture

Great shot, nice colors and detail, love the lone tree look with the mountains in the backround, oh and the clouds are in the top right 3rd :)
