Yes, I think you're right. I have been experimenting along the same lines. Without macro capabilities, I have to choose larger flowers, and shooting them against the sky resolves the problems of backgrounds not far enough out of focus and too "busy" by far. I think this one works quite well, although the blue looks rather gun-metal blue than "sky" blue...
