the PS work i did didn't help at all crop and then resized it. Thanks I'll try and open the f stops and per focus more.

Hi Bill
I cant see any area in this image that is sharp!
What did you focus on and how much of a crop is this.
Ive been shooting sport for quite a few years and a couple of things I would suggest is (a.) try pre focusing, those names on the hurdles make it very easy.. I very rarely use autofocus and shoot when the action comes to the point of pre-focus (b). try using a wider aperture . I shoot a lot at f2.8 and f4.0. The advantage of this is faster shutter speeds and less depth of field, and its suprising how much is in focus even at these wide apertures.
All of these techniques take a lot of practice but believe me you will start getting better results if you try them.
I would like to offer more suggestions but would need to see the original file to see whats going wrong with the image quality.
