Beautiful composition! I liked the tones!
That photo I took at evening (7 p.m.) in colour. In PS I used shadow/highlight (in image/adjustment)and sharp (a lot), then I put a gradient (in softlight blended layer)and Digital GEM (this plugin remove noise and give watercolours aspect to the image). Later I adjusted the image again with all adjustments (curves, satured colours, etc)!

A little bit unsharp, but sharp enough to enjoy, and it's very cute! I like the way you composed it and even if it's lacking some sharpness it's still well focused on the penguin I think. It looks funny and cute!
