Got some pretty narrow DOF goin here bud! Nice stuff. Your exposure sure was right on the money. At least it looks that way to me!

Miguel, when you shoot a photo at a faster shutter speed, the darker background parts will come out black because there just isn't enough light coming from the background. The brightness of the foreground is all that the film or digital sensor will record. Jean-Francois' suggestions will also work. Velvet does indeed absorb light well.

Handheld? Very good!
Powerful colors, nice black BG..

Very well presented floral composition, Eric. The frame has enhanced it a lot.
Congrats!

Carmem

Miguel, you don't need a studio to do such work. You would be suprised of what can be done in even a small appartment.

In a shot like this one, lighting is the most important aspect. That shot used macro photo. Possible that two source of light were used, one on each side. In that case, one source of light should be a bit lesser that the other, say by two stops. To avoid reflections and to have a black background, a large piece of black velvet should be used. I say velvet because it absorbs light very well.

My two cents!!!

The colors are fantastic, but I must admit that the reduced depth of field is bothering me. I think an image such as this one would certainly be better if it was all in focus.

Miguel, I did NOT shoot this in a studio. The easiest way to pull this off is to place your flower into direct sunlight and position it in such a way that there is DEEP shade behind it. That's what I did here. Bright sun and shade behind makes a lovely black background. To add to the mix a little, you can use a reflector to fill on some of the areas on the flower without effecting the background at all. Hope this helps / makes sense.

beautiful capture! looks unreal... surreal rather. i have to agree with mary sue here. the black background would work better with more dof. as is, the flower stands out as expected but the oof stem is hard to resolve. i see (i think) shapes towards the bottom of the photo. did you make the background black in PS? curious how it looks with a different background; maybe even just a tad lighter. i do like the black background better tho. so maybe the same shot at f/11 or so would work?

btw, love the frame! is it a template or did you build it yourself? very impressive.

take care,
tom

Thanks guys. Actually, I should have shot a bunch of this, but I was lazy. Next time I will make sure to bring the pod and fire off a ton of shots with all different DOF.

Black is fine but I would like to see more DOF.

Ok, ec. The black really is powerful here contrasted against the bright poppy. To my eye it is too much, especially considering there are other strong elements such as the lighting and selective focus.

I'm having difficulty visually resolving it all.

Now...on the otherhand...I LOVE the bright orange poppy. The rare times I've seen one of these blooms, they have danced in the wind so much it was impossible to shoot it with a macro, even at the fast shutter you selected.

Curious if you shot other views of this one?
