About Mt Vesuvius Volcano - summit elevation 1281 - is one of the world's dangerous volcanoes. Located near Naples, Italy.

Today two million people live in the immediate vicinity of Mount Vesuvius. This mountain has erupted more than 50 times since the eruption in 79 A.D., when it buried Pompeii and its sister city, Herculaneum. After Pompeii was buried and lost to history, the volcano continued to erupt every 100 years until about 1037 A.D., when it entered a 600-year period of quiescence. In 1631, the volcano killed an additional 4000 unsuspecting inhabitants. It was during the restoration after this eruption that workers discovered the ruins of Pompeii, buried and forgotten for nearly 1600 years. It would take another 300 years for the excavations to reveal the story of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Vesuvius has erupted about three dozen times since 79 A.D., most recently from 1913-1944. The 1913-1944 eruption is thought to be the end of an eruptive cycle that began in 1631.
I hope that this was last eruption...the mountain is still very alive...lots of gas and hot steam can feel around the crater...I was on the top of the Vesuvius and I had very strange, strong and impressive feelings....

Tremendous photograph, Orchid. Very emotional scene you captured here. One can see the steam going up the left side of the cater. A reminder that this monster is still alive. I am glad that you added some of the history to your comment. I enjoyed reading it.
Best regards. May there always be flowers in your life.
Jimmy

Hi Orchid, Great illustrated narrative! Very meaningful and profound. Looking at this shot, I can almost smell the Sulpher..... Beautiful barren landscape and definately a great atmosphere.... I can imagine why people would choose to live on the furtile lands around vulcanos, as I can imagine how you must have felt; on top of one of the most notorious vulcanos in the world, having a infamous history of death and destruction of which the momentos are clearly visible today. Feeling humble and small.... Great shot, my friend, and excellent reporting...:)

Cheers,

Hugo
