It is a good idea and a difficult one to be successful with. One thing you could do is to cover the lens with a shade to block the sun from hitting it directly. The flare wouldn't be so harsh. Another idea is to throw fine dust or sand into the air which gives the light a "beam-like" effect, like you would see in a Utah slot canyon photo, thus difusing the harsh rays.

Kris It's easy to see what you were going after here...the perspective is really good but the blown out highs are just too dominant to make this work....really excellent attempt here sooooo close.keep experimenting and shooting
