Mike; I assume "Ducks and Roots"? The play of light on the water in this photo is really nice with a great color palette, although the whites may be a little washed out. The roots in the foreground, and the dark, heavy tree-- upper right add weight, framing and contain the picture. I like it.
This photo has tremendous potential. All the elements are there to make it great. However, this is what I see as a problem with this shot:
The roots of the tree, which serve as leading lines, lead the eye to the blue reflections in the water, which in turn, leads the eye off the frame to the left. Whereas the tree on the left, with its top branches serves as a framing device, there's nothing on the left to frame the highlights.
The ducks blend with the water and the overall effect is a bit too busy. In fact, I see two photos here that clash. The first one is the pleasant nature scene with ducks in the water. The second, is an abstract with reflections in the water providing an interesting interplay. The problem is essentially that the two photos clash and I can't reconcile them through cropping.
I took the liberty of cropping your photo to illustrate what I think would be a better composition, however, that still doesn't completely address the problem of blending ducks and clashing themes.
