The lighting is very mysterious looking. Love the rocks and water and child..composition. There is something odd about the lighting effect tho. Like the moon is casting a shadow in the right direction from where it is and shining on the little girl but there also seems to be a lighting effect from above and behind the girl. Hmmmm..Anyway I do like this picture alot!

Man, even snapshots are getting difficult these days. Now you get to stress about shooting every shot with and without Jenny.
This is a wonderful picture with a wonderful mood. Which makes it worth the controversy because both with and without Jenny will appeal to different people.
What I like about Jenny in this photograph is her white coat/sweater. It balances the hot spot of the sun and makes this shot intimate where it could be cold.
Now for my suggestion--Crop this photo and present it as a perfect square. Do not take anything from the right--take it all from the left. I think it will increase the impact and balance of a wonderful photograph.
Congratulations.

Hi Sarah,
Photomanipulation has been around for a gazillion years. The fact that you seem to be looking for a code of ethics regarding the question is a big plus in my estimation. That being said, I'm glad to see this posted under the digital category. I think you and your mom have done a fine job here. Inclusion of your daughter adds an enigmatic emotional content that might not otherwise have been there. The disparate light sources adds to the surrealistic feel. On a technical aside, I would like to see a little more shadow detail in the rocks on the left side and perhaps some more detail work on Jenny to help her blend a little better. It would be interesting to see the original landscape for comparison purposes. Good job!

Sarah,
Digital manipulation vs. none, is always going to be debated. I personally think an image should be made in the camera as much as possible, but a little tweaking never hurts.
This image could stand on it's own, I think, but it's hard to tell because of manipulation. As is, there is too much dark space on the left and a crop would help.
The "sun" appears to be artificial because it doesn't match the illumination on your daughter.

Thanks for the comments. I realise Jenny's a bit central, but it was only taken as a snapshot really. I only submitted it because of the manipulation that my mum did on it. Maybe it would be interesting to see if I got any positive comments on the original! I personally like Jenny in the picture because it looks rather lonely.

simply beautiful Sarah and although I hope you did shots w/out Jenny, I think her presence makes this image for me - its dark and moody and a small child looking hesitantly toward the water. nice one!

I think this makes a very strong landscape, you could probably get rid of Jenny ! Interesting how the almost central placement of Jenny reduces her dominance in the frame.
