The Good Spirit created all things. Earth, Environment, Water, Air, Plants, Fish Birds, Insects and Animals. He had another great task to do. Creator called all the Animals, Birds, Fish and Insects to the meet them at the center place the next day. He told the group he was going to make humans. The group would be given the official names and they’d be helping to make humans to this world. All the Fish, Birds, Insects and Animals listened except Coyote who immediately set about bragging that he would be the first to pick an important name. He’d be chief overall and get everything he wanted. The others eyed him with disgust, for Coyote was not liked because of his smarty ways. They left to prepare for the next day. Coyote ran back to his teepee and told his wife mate, to gather lots of wood for his big fire he’d be up all night so he’d be ahead of everyone early morning. All night Coyote sat in front of the fire thinking of all the good names he could use. Grizzly Bear Chief of all four footed animals. Eagle Chief of the skies or Salmon Chief of the waters. By and by Coyote grew sleepy and nodded off just for a second. He took a twig, broke it into and propped up his eyelids so he’d be sure to stay awake all night now. Good Spirit knew of Coyotes plan, so he caused Coyote to doze off despite Coyotes eyes being propped open with twigs. Mole saw his husband sleeping, but didn’t have daily chores that morning. Others passed by Coyotes teepee. Pointed as his propped up eyes. Coyote seeing the sun was high in the sky jumped up and ran to the meeting place. When Coyote entered no one but he Great Spirit was there. Coyote was overjoyed as he felt he must have beat everyone to the meeting. Now he could pick any name he wanted. He told the Great Creator that he wanted Grizzly Bear as his name. Creator shook his head and said the name was given. Coyote then piped up and said he be Eagle - for which Creator said Eagle was give too. Coyote then said he’d be Salmon again Creator said, it was taken, as were all the other names except Coyote and that would he his name. Coyote hung his head in sadness slumped down on his knees dejected. The great Spirit felt sorry for Coyote for he knew of his selfish ways. He told Coyote he had made Coyote oversleep and saved the last name for Coyote because he had plans for Coyote to help him with the humans. The Great Spirit told Coyote to get up and he had lots of work for Coyote to do before the humans came. He would give Coyote special powers to help him with the humans and make the fox his half brother to bring Coyote back to life when Coyote did foolish things to cause himself to die. (That’s another sorry) Coyote so happy about this that he ran in circles nipping and yipping as his own tale. Great Spirit watched Coyote in his elation. Smiling greatly for he knew Coyote had lots of work to do to help the humans in this world.
