Had a chat today wiff me students… and the subject wound round to baseball caps. Seems the good folk here in Lame Deer are all about track and field, basketball and football. They have no foundation of baseball. I have tried to extol the virtues of the best game in the Colonies… and have met with resistance… So today, I said in class:”I see you wear baseball caps. I don’t care what is on the hat… they are still baseball caps. You, there… you have a baseball cap on with the symbol of the University of Texas Longhorns football team… but it is still a baseball cap. And you (check…..) have a baseball cap on with a bit of Montana Grizzlies (football) team… and still, whatever the image, it is a baseball cap ya wear.” One chap piped up, “It is NOT a baseball cap! It is a hat!” I reached behind me… I held up… A baseball cap with the logo of the Nagoya, Japan baseball team (Chunichi Dragons) and smiled… “NO… it is a baseball cap… With what you love on the front!” I held up another hat: “I also have one with Mickey Mouse on it! Still… it is a baseball cap.” And then, the last bit… I pulled out a hat I have worn a few times in Lame Deer… and I said, “This is a baseball cap with the Beatles on it. They never played baseball… but they did play base…”
I fear my cute and clever comment fell on deaf ears……
