About I was hiding on the edge of a field looking for deer fawns when I saw this guy come out of a hedge row. It meandered around and eventually started heading right towards me. It was so close at one point I stopped taking pics because I knew he would hear me. He layed down in the tall grass about 40 feet in front of me. My foot went numb from kneeling behind my tripod but I waited, afraid to move. When it got up, it looked towards me and I snapped this picture.

Thanks Don. Since he was in flat light and it was getting dark, I had my lens almost wide open at f4. The depth of field was inches so most of the shot wond up out of focus. I had to manual focus due to the tall grass.

Thanks Wolf. The side wind certainly helped. The truth is I wasn't expecting him to come from where he did. They usually come from my side where there is better evening light. He did wander into the better light but he was further away there. When he napped in front of me, I could only see a tiny portion of one side of his antlers. I locked my tripod on that spot and waited, hidden behind my tripod on the edge of the woods.

I love the 'mistiness' of the tall grass. a wonderful composition, well balanced. it's as if your animals are modeling for you

Great story, i have been in similar situations but never got shots like this. Congrats and I see the side-wind helped you not to be detected by smell.
