I forgot to mention that I paid just over $100.00 for a set of Kenko extension tubes which I use with my 50mm prime lens. It is much more challenging than I thought to get good macro images from it. I wish I had held out for the camera with the lcd screen rather than the view finder because it is really tough to get the focus right in that small window. But I have seen others' macro shots with this combo and they are quite nice. The tubes are supposed to work great with a 100mm like the one you're renting.

That is a good idea about renting before buying. It would be disappointing to invest a great deal of money only to find you don't like the lens... however, I don't think I'd be too disappointed in buying an "L" lens... that is if I can convince my hubby that it's a good deal! lol
Did you know you can search for "Images By Lens" here? I have done that with my lenses to see the potential the lens has if I became good at it.
I'm finding that my "old eyes" have more to do with the lack of quality in my photos than anything else. It does take alot of patience to get the really good shots. I need to use my camera more, like you are. You are inspiring me. Right now I have my main zoom lens sent out to Canon for repair.. when it comes back I hope to get busy with it, especially with the upcoming fall foliage.
