About We went camping over Memorial Day weekend in Bodega Bay, California (USA). Dogs had a great time running on the beach and in the bay. During low tide the bay becomes a dirty, wet playground for the dogs who ran to their hearts content, chasing birds, digging for clams and crunching on crab shells.

This is Opie, our 5 year old Jack Russell Terrier, in the bay during low tide.

A successfully shown scene that wakes empathy at the spectator. Regards Gerhard

Another wonderful photo of Opie. I hate to here what happened though, but I'm glad there was a happy ending. We do a lot of camping also, and the things we see on the trails and campsites drives me nuts. Lots of times we have to clean a campsite before we can camp. I was once a boy scout, back in the day, and learned early to leave a campsite in better condition than how you found it. I'll get off my soapbox now. I'm really glad to here he's doing OK.

Sounds like quite the ordeal for Opie. Jacks are a tough breed. He looks better in this picture than post op. Hope he is back to old self again. Be well, Stan

The very next day as we were getting things ready for our trip back home, we had the dogs tethered nearby relaxing on the dunes/beach sand. During that time (unknown to us until much later) Opie ate some sand that we believed was covered in bacon grease (why else would he eat sand??) carelessly tossed away by a previous camper during breakfast (we found cracked egg shells in the area also). He later developed a nasty belly ache and experienced vomiting. We wasted no time and rushed him to the ER Vet who eventually had to perform surgery to remove the intestinal obstruction caused by about 1 cup of sand!!! So watch your little doggies... ours sure gave us a scare!

Here's what he looked like 3-days post surgery. He was a bit groggy, but has been a very good boy during his recovery. He looks much better today and in a couple days will have the staples removed (all 11).
