About 3 years ago, when I was working on my teaching certification… I applied for the honors program at Illinois State University. To graduate “with honors” is quite the feather in the cap. I managed to do 2 honors efforts. I needed 6 to make the grade. Still, of the 2 This is a photo of one. I interviewed WWII veterans from my hometown and have their words on tape. Dominic Richetto, Ralph Engleman and Vince Krolak. I talked with (for hours) second generation Italians, Poles and Germans on why they went to war. It is some great listening. No one in the world but me has the info… maybe I should share it with some folks who are important.

Then again… maybe I’ll just take a pic of the tapes and let the rest stay… to be lost and forgotten as the world turns and shifts…

My wife and I are geneology buffs, and regularly scour the web for info. So, we Google the family names, and every once in a while, we find an interesting gem...a Family Tree Maker posting, a photo, and now, your pic. I'll email you direct with more details, and thank you for the reply.

Wow... since I posted this over (almost 2) a year ago... how did you find this pic? Interesting... I met Vince through his son Jim. Jim is probably an uncle? I also know Billy pretty darn well and taught his daughter in a few classes. Billy would be a cousin? I will dig up the tapes and try and transcribe them to digital. I would love to send you a cd. It may not happen soon. My son is getting married in a few days and I am a bit busy. Again, thanks for dropping a line.... do you know the story of Vince and the military hanging? OH! And it is easier getting in contact with me here: kidney_pie@hotmail.com

I think you should share the stories--it would be a shame for those stories to be lost. What you may find to be trivial, may in fact, be very important to others. I happen to be related to one of the WWII veterans that you interviewed, and would appreciate a copy of the tapes. The Krolak family settled in the Peru/Peoria/Normal area early in the 20th century, and my great grandfather was Vincent Krolak. I would certainly appreciate the consideration of a reply. Thank you,
Vince Krolak

It is all... silliness... we think and save what we want and the rest can just pass along the way. What we believe important has no meaning in other generations. Still, what we think relevant helps us pass through life and set our weary head to pillow on the final night... and drift off... understanding and believing that what is important to us is all that matters.
