DAYTON — The start of the Vectren Dayton Air Show mixed the old _ a replica of an early Wright brothers airplane which flew at 60 mph _ with new U.S. Air Force supersonic aircraft as the annual show began on Saturday.
The pilots had to contend with overcast skies and a relatively low cloud cover that limited the amount of air space where their aerobatic performances could be visible to the thousands of spectators on the grounds of Dayton International Airport.
A pilot flew the Wright B Flyer in from its home at Dayton Wright Brothers Airport, south of Dayton, for multiple passes in front of the crowd as spectators snapped photographs.
The crowd also saw a demonstration of the Marine Corps'AV-8B Harrier, a plane with the ability to hover in midair and take off quickly from limited-length runways.
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds precision flying team and the Brazilian air force's demonstration team, known as the Smoke Squadron because its planes give off smoke trails as they fly their aerobatic routines, are the featured acts in the air show, which ends on Sunday.
This year's show celebrates the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.
