Jason, The problem isn't so much with your scanning but your post processing after scanning.
Do you have an editor? If so what is it called and version?
I also have been a photographer for many years, mainly B&W (1950/70) processing but once you turn a print into a digital image on a computer, more work has to be done to adjust the tonal range. I use Adobe Photoshop which is the best program but takes a lot of learning and patience.

Thanks for taking the time to critic! The others you commented on you are right. I am not doing a good job of scanning the older prints. The prints I hold in my hand seem (to me) to have the right amount of contrast however it doesn't translate to the screen. perhaps I should bump up the contrast a little more before I upload. Many of the images I do are rather "delicate" and meant to be soft, but not flat. Used a "wet" darkroom both B&W and color for 30 plus years. Maybe one day I will get the hang of digital. Thanks again for your comments on the other images too.

Jason, This is a very nice picture but.....to my old eye's it looks flat and therefor makes it less interesting but again, you could improve this with some further post processing. I would like to suggest that you play with levels and curves and you should be able to come up with something like the attached. It is not perfect but IMHO much better.

Adjusted with levels then curves. |
