Darulaman was designed by European architects in the 1920s and was meant to symbolise King Amanullah Khan's plans for democratic modernisation.

Most of the destruction took place during the early 1990s when the rival Mujahedin factions fought for control of Kabul. There is some discussion at the moment that the building should be restored and used to house the Afghan parliament, but private finance will have to be found for the work.

What a waste, looks like it would have been quite a monument in it's day, and surprisingly European in appearance.
