Maryanne -- The low five has roots in ancient tribal gestures. Sort of an understated Apostolic "hello" along the lines of a secret handshake. Hmmmm.

Doyle -- In the 15th Century, when the carving was executed, the gesture was known as a "low five". Peter, well known as being especially gregarious, was depicted in the manner of such a greeting.
I thought you had an extensive fine arts education and would have known that. :)
