About
Handheld night shot of the boat launch on the South Saskatchewan River next to - as the title suggests - the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. Taken after Camera Club meeting, appropriately enough. I have been reading about and looking at photos of Edward Steichen, who at one time worked in a "painterish" style, and had a fondness for night shots. So this is a small tribute to him. Shutter speed was more like 1/4 seconds.
Jon, For a real laugh check out this site. It is a bit of a satire on online photo critiquing. Hackers like us critique famous images. All tongue in cheek. The Steichen Moonlight Pond is featured, with a negative review. Lots of fun to read and it will remind you of some of the stuff you have read here. :) Andre
Hi Jon. You have done a very nice job of paying homage to one of the early styles of Edward Steichen. He was an amazing artist! I still remember getting books from the library and viewing his work full of awe, when I first started photography. Thousands of young photographers have been greatly influenced by him. Were you aware that his image "The Pond - Moonlight" 1904 has just rescently smashed the record for the highest price ever reached at an auction? At Sotheby's NY the image sold for $2,928,000. Andre
Thanks, Eddy - yes, now that you point it out I quite agree. A human figure leaning against one of the lamp posts would help make this photograph tell a story.
